I Feel Like Writing Today

Hello!

It’s been about four months since my last newsletter. A handful of you reached out over the winter to share your enjoyment of it, which meant a lot to me. Thank you.

The long answer to why haven’t I been writing? is a combination of life factors (got married, went to the Amazon jungle for an ayahuasca retreat, other typical things) and my energy.

The short answer is: my energy.

I have a standing calendar block on Mondays to write a newsletter post, and each Monday I evaluate whether it feels aligned. For the past four months or so, it hasn’t. But this Monday, it did! And now I’m writing this—on a Monday.

I’ve been reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, a hands-on book to spark the reader’s creativity.

The two core practices are:

  1. Daily morning pages—three pages of word vomit every morning upon waking, and

  2. Artist dates—two hours per week devoted to myself and something I enjoy.

Each chapter of the book represents a week, and each week includes different exercises to reconnect with my creative energy. The combination of morning pages, artist dates, and exercises has been wonderful for me.

I played a nostalgic video game (Backyard Baseball) for the first time in over 15 years. I started taking Capoeira martial arts classes at a nearby studio.

The book has delivered on its promise of reconnecting me to my creativity—and my life force, which I think are the same thing—feels heart-pumpingly vital.

When I get a newsletter I want to read in my inbox but don’t have the energy for in the moment, I’ll sometimes punt it a few weeks down the line to see if it clicks with me then.

One that clicked for me yesterday was Jas’ book review on an Alan Watts book.

I assume, from Jas’ perspective, they read a book they liked, wanted to contemplate it, and shared their thoughts as a way to do that.

I further assume the share was purely for that reason—not for me as the reader—which is one of the reasons I enjoyed reading it so much.

Authenticity. That’s where my mind is at these days.

And I genuinely felt like writing this today and reconnect with you for a moment.

Hope you’re doing well! Now check out my retreat and wedding.
